Dubai International Airport is one of the chief airline hubs located in middle-east and undoubtedly the major international airport functioning in Dubai. Located under the administration of the district named Al Garhoud, it is at a distance of 4.6km on the eastern side of Dubai. Dubai Airports holds the responsibility for the efficient functioning of this airport which serves as the base for a number of carriers including FlyDubai, Emirates SkyCargo and Emirates. It has the fame for being the biggest airline center in the Middle Eastern region and takes care of a large portion of the passenger traffic. The airport also acts as the main base for Flydubai which is one of the best low cost carriers in this region. It has also been acting as Qantas’ secondary hub from the month of April in 2013.
Possessing three large terminals, it has the total strength of more than 80 mn passengers every year. The third terminal holds the credit for being the biggest building in terms of floor space and the biggest terminal across the globe. Apart from handling a lot of passenger traffic, it stands amongst the biggest and busiest cargo airports with the capacity to handle 2.44 mn tonnes. The Dubai International Airport plays a very important role in the Dubai economy as it employs more than fifty five thousand people and supports nearly two lakh jobs indirectly. According to reports, it contributes to one fourth of the GDP of Dubai which is expected to rise up to 32% by 2020.
